NSWT MAKE SELECTIONS FOR USA TOUR

Tuesday, December 22, 2009 - Submitted by Doug Crosse in Richmond Hill, ON
Canada's senior women begin 2010 World Cup preparations in earnest with a two match tour to the USA in January, part of a comprehensive schedule leading up to the England based championships in the fall.

First year women's coach Johnathon Long has named an experienced squad to take on the USA women in a pair of tests in Lakeland, Florida on January 12 and 16th.

Long says, "that we feel that this is an important opportunity to build on our world cup preparations."

The tour will also feature Canada's U20 women taking on their US counterparts on the 16th.

Long's US counterpart, Kathy Flores, is keen to play Canada again after narrowly winning against them at the Nation's Cup this past August.

“Having beaten Canada in the last minute of our match in the Nations Cup shows that both teams are well matched and we expect these two matches to be no different,” Flores added.

“We expect fierce competition, as Canada has just played the French twice and beat them in their first test. However, as with any rivalry, we are prepared to battle for the win.”

The squad is deep with experience with names like Leslie Cripps, Gillian Florence, Heather Jaques, Arabah Chintoh, Sarah Ulmer and Mandy Marchak looking to show some leadership against the USA.

Exciting newcomers include prop Tabitha Stavrou, fullback Andrea Burke and wing Brittany Waters to name a few.

In 2009 Canada is 3-4 including victories over the USA, South Africa and France.  The 14-5 win over France was part of a two match tour for the women's team to the European country and was the first win over the French in nearly a decade.
